Watch for new product lines in the next several days. We will soon offer additional DLP, CRT , and LCD  Projectors by other manufactures.

HD For Home and Business (Front Projectors)

Although Seleco's SVD 800HD had that "just-a-hair-soft" quality characteristic of three-gun CRTs, it did a great job otherwise with a score of straight 5s. Ditto Sharp's XG-V10WU, the only other projector to get straight 5s. JVC's DLA-G11U had wonderful video, but its color accuracy and white balance were a tad off (reddish).

The latter problem also affected Panasonic's PT-L701U, while InFocus' LP340 just didn't have
enough contrast. NEC's VT540, Toshiba's TLP-770, and Proxima's DP9260 brought up the
middle of the pack.

Self-contained 16:9 Widescreen

If the writing was on the wall in the self-contained 4:3 category, then this category should have been considered "prophecies fulfilled." Of the six contestants (two entrants were withdrawn), only one used a CRT for its monitor, the other five were plasma-display panels.

Net TV's DTV-36XW CRT monitor hung in there. For a 36-inch tube it did fairly well, but scoredstraight 4s in all evaluation categories. Maybe a little more time spent in setup would have helped. Among the 40-inch crowd, Panasonic's new TH-42PWD3U took the trophy with perfect 5s, edging out NEC's PlasmaSync 42MP2 in grayscale and RGB scaling, and Fujitsu's PDS-4221 in grayscale, color accuracy, white balance, and RGB scaling.

The 50-inch tilt was a two-entrant event, featuring Pioneer's PDP-502MX and NEC's PlasmaSync 5000W. When the dust (and sequence of Shoot-Out images) had cleared, the Pioneer unit looked just that much better in the grayscale and white balance areas, but it was a pretty close race.

Large Audience Project 16:9

Once again, it was time to walk into the largest Shoot-Out venue and watch some more high-brightness
DLP boxes battling for supremacy. Of the four entrants, only NEC's XT5000 used 1024x768 DMDs; the rest were equipped with 1280x1024 chip sets.

Upon seeing the NEC unit in this category, my initial reaction was, "Why?" Comparing horsepower, only the Digital Projection Lightning 6sx was a fair match, because the Barco and Panasonic projectors are rated at more than 10,000 lumens.

In terms of brightness, the NEC was equal to the task. However, in terms of contrast, it was
handily beaten, producing images that lacked punch and looked washed out. DP's Lightning
6sx had a better time of it, although the 720p and 1080i source material looked a little soft.

Barco's ELM R12 brought plenty of horsepower to the table, yet the image appeared to be
blooming at times, with a touch of ringing observed. Was this because of lens problems or
bandwidth problems? Could have been either one. Panasonic's PT-D9600U fared a bit better,
but its color accuracy was a little off the mark, and it too was squeezing some signals in the
pipe.
